Making the Internet of Things - Part I

it-starts-with-an-idea
It starts with an idea.

An idea that automates, informs, or assists through the use of technology such as monitoring temperature and humidity of a conditioned space. Or, closing a garage door after 30 to 60 minutes of being open. Armed with this idea, it is necessary to understand that there are multiple strategies that can be used to accomplish the vision of the idea.

The main components of any idea that requires the use of the Internet of Things is, firstly, the hardware, secondly, the analytics software, and, thirdly, the visual interface.

The Hardware

The hardware requires knowledge and understanding of basic electronics engineering. It is important to note that there is a vast network of engineers, makers, and creators who openly share their ideas on the internet. Open source websites such as Adafruit and Instructables are communities that share circuit configurations, hardware details, and component specifications.

Starting at of the two websites will provide the necessary information on which electronic components are required, need to be purchased, and circuit configuration with Arduino or Raspberry Pi.

Arduino with Ultrasonic Sensor
The above is a Ultrasonic Sensor (motion detector) connected to an Arduino ArduCAM board with WiFi accessibility. This board has a SD Card reader if one does not wish to connect to the board to the internet. Please note that the ESP 8266 module was utilized to program this board. More on programming in Part II of the blog.
