As coordinator for the Energy Initiative since 2010, Thomas Aláan develops and implements energy-related programs for the UIC Energy Initiative; cultivates partnerships at the civic, national, and international level; and collaborates with energy professionals and institutions around Chicago. Most notable of these programs is the acclaimed Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE), of which he remains the primary administrator. Now in its fifth year, the program is central to the work of the Energy Initiative and remains its most visible program. Thomas works closely with UI LABS, Argonne National Laboratory, the Clean Energy Trust, and Chicago universities to grow SISE and related programming. Thomas coordinates comparable institutional programming, including the iThink lecture series, an interactive lecture series featuring STEM and sustainability related topics; the University of Common Sense, a series of sustainability-related panel discussions produced collaboratively with the Office of Sustainability and School of Public Health; and ENERnational, a dialogue focused on international energy issues. As coordinator of the Energy Initiative, he supervises and disseminates marketing materials; develops websites and branding; hires and supervises student workers and interns; represents the Energy Initiative vision as a guest presenter and panelist; and writes grants. Outside UIC, Thomas is a classical musician and historically informed performer. He is an active as a performer, teacher, and conductor in the Midwest and has concertized across the country. He holds an M.A. in vocal pedagogy from Texas Woman’s University, a B.A. in music education from Alderson-Broaddus University, and a Certificate in Emerging Nonprofits from The Law Project. He is Executive Director of the Bach and Beethoven Ensemble and Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Community Activism Law Alliance, both 501(c)3 organizations.
